I have a Dell dimension 2400 and the motherboard recently went bad. My cousin got me the * Manufacturer's name - ASUS A7N8X-LA * HP/Compaq name - Explorer 2 as a replacement. heres what the sticker says on the MB/ HP pin 5187-4113/ Besides the sound problem it says im missing a SM bus controller and Ethernet Controller. I have no clue what to do theres nothing in the add/remove programs which deals with audio. I believe i used to have soundMAX something or other. Voting Question: iPhone 3G S replacement a refurb?

Being that the phone was just released friday (date I purchased) and I got it replaced the day after (today) do you think I received new hardware? I checked apples warranty checker and it says the warranty expires June 19, 2010, not June 20, 2010 so could this be another indication it is a new replacement? Resolved Question: Shopping advice - please?

My Sears lawnmower has a torn belt. I have called my local Sears Parts House and was told that this belt is a very common hardware item. The Sears price is a ridiculous $13.99 for this single belt! =:-o Should I shop ELSEWHERE for this "common" V-belt or should I continue buying these replacement parts from the single Parts house where I have bought all my Sears repair parts with the SEARS warrantee reputation? more

Voting Question: Can I get a replacement iPhone?

My iPhone has many defects - -Many visible colored pixels -Home button stuck in/doesnt work -Sound buttons seem hard to push in -Sometimes the volume shoots up, and I immediately force the iPhone away from my ear [Ill get on more of that later] And some other minor things, due to the latter - one time when the volume shot up to a 100% I immediatly got the iphone away from my ear as a rwxtion and it caused the screen to crack at the top right corner. Will they cover this? Technically the Volume part was a hardware problem that was there fault. The iPhone broke due to that. Thank you ^^I said the volume is what made me remove the iphone quickly from my ear - thus breaking it when it hit the floor. Sorry Sam, but I am not an idiot - I know it would not break the iPhone I have warranty, I bought the phone around February. I do not have insurance, as I did not know where to get insurance nor was I offered insurance. more

Resolved Question: What is the best job for a person with a Bachelors in Computer Science\Mathmatics?

I'm going to be a junior at my college and I decided to have a co-concentration major of Computer Science\Mathematics. When I graduate, in 2011, what would be my best projected job choice for then? I enjoy playing with computer hardware (I have built a few computers myself). I also have experience working at the college help desk and doing student technician work (PC replacements, script writing, etc.). Any and all advice would be helpful! more

Resolved Question: I need ideas for faults which I can cause to my computer so I can then remedy solutions to those problems.?

Basically I'm doing a hardware assignment which requires me to create 2 fault scenarios so I can then go through diagnostic steps to remedy a solution to the fault. It'd be a big help if you could think of a few problems which I can cause to my computer and a few possible solutions in which I could then try to fix that problem, thanks :] Note: The fault problem requires 2 or more solutions and not involve hardware damage which would need a simple replacement solution. more

Voting Question: 1.5TB Seagate HDD, RAW partitions, data recovery?

I bought a 1.5TB Seagate HDD in April 2009. I created 3 partitions - 200GB, 1034GB, and 163GB in size. I was using Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit installed on a 30GB partition on a 500GB Seagate HDD. I also had the Windows 7 Beta (Build 7000) 32-bit installed on a 30GB partition on a 320GB Seagate HDD. All the partitions were NTFS. I didn't realise for a while, but the 500GB HDD had a physical failure. Fortunately, it hadn’t totally given way, but Vista would often freeze and not respond even when I hit ctrl+shift+esc to launch the Task Manager. I often used the reset button when this happened. One of the times I did this, I skipped chkdsk on the 1034GB and 163GB partitions during start-up. Eventually, both these partitions became RAW. Windows would still run chkdsk on these partitions while booting, if they were connected. It would reach a stage (about 79% into the check, I think) where it would say "Correcting errors in Master File Table (MFT)" or something like that on 2 consecutive lines. I left it for a few hours once thinking that it would probably solve the problem given time. That didn’t help either. Eventually, even the200GB partition became RAW. I eventually took my 500GB HDD to my hardware vendor and got it replaced. In the mean time, Windows 7 became my primary (and only) OS and I have even upgraded to the RC (Build 7100). I am currently using the Windows 7 RC 32-bit installed on the new 500GB HDD I got as a replacement for my previous unit. I need to recover the data on the RAW partitions. I have tried data recovery software. I have gone to Seagate’s website to check if my HDD is one of the units affected with the firmware issue (yes it is a 7200.11 Barracuda). Seagate says my unit isn’t affected. I still downloaded the firmware, burnt it to a CD and tried to update my HDD’s firmware. It tells me to point it to the correct HDD. When I do, it says that I have picked the wrong one and gives me the model number of the HDD I need to point it to. It’s the same as the model number of my HDD. I have even tried formatting the partitions. It always fails. The whole PC slows down when it is connected. I have tried formatting it from a windows installation disc. I get the error “0x8007045d”. There are 100’s of gigs of really important data I need to recover from those partitions. I don’t have a copy of the data anywhere else. I have started backing up all important data since this happened. A professional data recovery service is not an option considering the amount of data I need recovered without selling my house. It has a 5 year warranty, but I don’t know whether this qualifies me for a replacement, and even if it does, I don’t even want to think about a replacement until I can get the data off this one. If it helps, my PC’s configuration is Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 2GB DDR2-800 RAM, Asus P5B-VM, Zebronics 8600GT (512MB), LiteOn LH-20A1P (IDE). Currently, I’m only using the new 500GB HDD for storage, with my 320GB HDD being used for backup. I have provided all the information I think could be even remotely important. If there is anything missing, feel free to ask and I’ll add it. more

So I would just get the Family Pack. I do play Games, Word Processing (iWork'09 & Office for Mac) Excel, Powerpoint, Word, etc.) Also I use photoshop and Final Cut, Web Surfing, Music Work. I download a lot of programs. So I need a display but I'm not sure if I should wait on it which is a bit hard. I will also apply Invisible shield from Zagg. I saw the adapters and the cables that I would need if I purchase them to add a cheap external monitor and for that I prefer to purchase the Cinema Display. Which is great because of the iSight, Microphone, Speakers, and the Viewing quality. I like the USB Hubs in the back and the Display Port as well as the Mag Safe Charger. Which is why its great to use in Clam-shell Mode as a Desktop replacement. I don' believe WWDC will be anything major accept to release software and maybe a minor refresh of the macs. But with those specs that I would get it would already be a refresh. Is better than the 2.4GHz and already Fully loaded. Do you think there can be any HardWare Changes? If you do What do you think? Also Do you think we will see a new product like a iPad or something totally new?Laziboi75 - "personally I hate macs and windows is way better for the price too. for example i would see a 2.66ghz mac book up for $2,000 and right next to it a hp with like 10 times the power for $1,000" so my real reaction is why in the world would you get a mac that costs more and is less capable? My Answer to that is simple. Yes you are 100% Right they are $1,000 Cheaper BUT you spend the extra 1000 dollars repairing the broken pieces and spending the rest on antivirus software, along with the frustration. Also Macs are better for build quality, the features, and truthfully the OS is 1000 times better than VISTA and windows 7 might be good but thats whats great about macs you can use boot camp and get the best of both worlds. Now onto Somebody - You dont need to have a PC to have compatibility ever heard of Boot Camp. Yea look it up you can run both OS X and Windows. Also like I said PC's quality is cheap, Crappy programs that are useless, and the cost of fixing it.Also Somebody Macs dont just have speakers and webcam. They have hard drive motion sensing so you dont loose your work when and if you drop it. Also PC's dont have advanced features like a Trackpad made of glass and Gestures which kicks PC where the sun dont shine. Also XP is great but nothing compared to snow leopard and windows 7 might be good but it will fail to snow leopard. Its sad that Windows had to create an all new OS in less than 2 years because the current one sucks. Snow leopard is to improve leopard to make it 10 times better than it already is. Thats not to say that windows and PC's are bad just that I had and I have them also but its time for more changes.Im Always Right - So Far you are winning. Your one of the few that actually answered my question and has a brain on why Mac is better and your not Windows brainwashed. I thank you for your input. But then again your always right. And by the way he 2.53 GHz model is about 2,200. Which is great for the features. more

Resolved Question: How can I stop my GeForce 6200LE from occasionally rebooting my computer?

I've got an nVidia GeForce 6200LE that I recently purchased off eBay. I'm quite happy with its performance except for one issue - after using a 3d program such as a game or modelling software for a few hours, the computer will suddenly reboot without warning. I've checked the card to make sure that the fan on it is spinning (it is) and not clogged with dust (it isn't), however I am still a bit suspicious that it could be overheating. The card is manufactured by Inno3D and arrived brand-new in a sealed box. It's actually a replacement for the first card I ordered, which turned out to be faulty (lines across the screen and other odd visual artifacts) and I had to send it back. I'm wondering now if perhaps I should have researched the Inno3D brand before purchasing, since it seems like this manufacturer may be producing low-quality hardware. I'm currently using the 84.21 version of the nVidia drivers, since this is widely claimed to be the most stable driver for these cards. I was using the latest 185.85 drivers, but was hoping that the older stable drivers would solve the problem. Would it be worth trying to put a larger heatsink on the card? Or should I look at selling this card and buying a different one? more

Resolved Question: Thermal Shutdown on Computer?

Hey there, I was wondering if anyone can tell me the characteristics of a Thermal Shutdown on a Laptop/PC? Does the computer immediately cut off? or is there a warning and then a cut off? My laptop just seems to keep cutting out after a period of time and especially when I try and play a game (just cuts power immediately and screen goes blank). I found the laptop in a bin and did some research into it (Amilo M3438G) and found out the problem was the original Graphics card in it was fried. So I got a replacement for the Nvidia 6800 Go and instead put a ATi X1800 in. Which generates ALOT of heat! So I am trying to figure out if its a heat issue or maybe a glitch caused by incompatibility of a new hardware device that was not meant for that Laptop? Thanks I know alot about computers so please dont patronize me with any stupid answers like Ctrl +Alt +Del more

Resolved Question: Help on my psp button not functioning properly?

Lately after I started playing my psp more my right trigger has either been unresponsive to where pressing it doesn't work at all or the trigger seem stuck (like auto trigger or turbo) where if I'm playing a shooting game it keeps firing or when playing anything it seems like the right trigger is pressing itself rapidly and the only way to make it function properly is to hit it and it works fine for a few minutes and then goes right back. Resolved Question: Hardware issue, computer makes a weird sound and shuts down.?

Hi, this seems to happen almost all the time when I watch videos on my computer. At a certain point, my screen goes black, my computer lets off a long buzz sound and shuts down itself and I cannot turn it back on before some time. I was first guessing that this could be due to an overheating problem but my 4 fans seem to be working just fine. My computer is rather old(4 years) not overclocked and I didn't have this problem until just recently. I really don't have much of a clue of what is going on and would like some opinions before bringing it for repair or part replacement. Thanks for all the answers.A problem with the graphics could be very likely like gumpo said, since it always dies when I'm watching videos...Graphics card* more

Voting Question: I had a problem installing a new power supply in my computer?

My OS is windows vista home premium on an AMD athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 3800+ with 1gb of ram and a nvidia geforce 6150se nforce 430 graphics card. The model ID is SR5130NX and it's made by compaq. The motherboard is M2N68-LA. The old power supply it came with is made by Bestec, model atx-250-12z rev: D3R Basically it's the sr5130nx model with all of the standard parts. I wanted to upgrade some of the equipment in it so I decided to change the power supply to one with more wattage to handle the new equipment, but after switching out the old power supply for the new one the computer would turn on and the power supply was running, as was its cooling fan and the cooling fan on my cpu. I was able to open and close the cd-rom drive as well, but the problem is that the keyboard and monitor and my external hard drive showed no signs of communication with the computer whatsoever. The monitor stayed as if it were not connected to the comptuer at all, the external hard drive did not light up, and the keyboard made no response and I couldn't turn on the num lock light or the caps lock light. After putting the old power supply back into the computer it worked fine again. Where did I go wrong? is the power supply broken? could it be that the newer power supply is simply noncompatible with my older computer in some way? did I simply connect the cables wrong somehow? Here is a link to the new power supply I wanted to use http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817226001 Here is a link to the old power supply for my computer http://www.censuspc.com/Bestec--ATX-250-12Z-Rev-S--250-watt-20-4-Pin-SATA-Connector-Replacement-for-DELL-Power-Supply--pr-3372.html Keep in mind that I hadn't installed any other new hardware besides the power supply. more

Resolved Question: Toshiba A215-5817 hard drive replacement. How hard is it to do?

I've owned a Toshiba laptop for a little more than a year now and for the past 3 months or so I've been having some issues with it. It would just shut down on me for no reason. I've reinstalled the software countless times thinking that was the problem but apparently not. Last night I was trying to reboot it and I got an error message that the hard drive was about to fail and that I need to back it up or replace it. I've looked online for replacement drives and found them very reasonable. So, in the next week or so I'm gonna order one as soon as I find the one I like and install it. How difficult is it to do and once I install it do I simply put the recovery disks in it to reinstall Vista and the original hardware that came with the laptop? Help!!!!!Again, I've had it more than a year so the 1 year warranty is now null and void. Plus, if I send it off to Toshiba it'll probably be gone a few weeks before I get it back where as I can install the new hard drive and have it back up and running in no time. more

Resolved Question: How to fix laptop screen?

My laptop screen is broken, and it displays a mess of different colors that covers the whole screen, and I can not use my laptop at all as a result. Is there a way to fix this display problem, or do I have to completely replace the monitor? If I have to replace it, where could I buy a monitor to replace it? I tried to search online, but no one sells them. I don't think Bestbuy would sell laptop monitor replacements, or would they? How do I make sure that the screen that I buy will fit my laptop? Thank you all!!! more

Resolved Question: GPU + PSU Replacement?

Hi. I'm thinking of replacing my gpu and my psu. I am thinking of buying a OCZ Modxstream 600w and a 4870 Toxic 1 GB OC. My mobo is a Msi G31M3-f (know it sucks). But i'm kind of anxious for everything going well. I'm currently having a 6200 on board so listen to my worst scenario: I'm buying them, successfully installing them, and then booting up the pc and BOOM. All gone :P . Please tell me is it an easy process? Not only the hardware installation, but also the drivers. Thx!I'm not that stupid! I've installed dvd-roms, sata hdds, ram and even a psu! But this time I'm really anxious about the card... I have a feeling that everything will go wrong! As I understood the PSU that I referred to is really more than enough. So, nevermind, I will be able to use it in future too. Thank you all! I'll be trying to wire everything up myself and wish me luck! ;) more

Resolved Question: Is there any replacement solid state digital audio recorder to me?

I got a small Sony MiniDisc Recorder model MZ-N10. It's got Net MD and LP4 modes but not Hi-MD. Is there any replacement solid state digital audio recorder to me that would do an equally good job quality wise of recording both music and voice and have the ability and battery life to do that for upto 12 hours?I have a few good mics already and battery box with bass roll off so that parts not a problem, its just the hardware I'm intersted in recommendations for. Resolved Question: what turbo came stock on the 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX?

Was it the Td05h or the t04e? I had a 16g on it but it blew up so I tried to find a stock replacement, I bought a used td05h but a lot of things don't match up on it (like the oil inlet and return line fittings). They seem to be off ever so slightly. I'm considering just buying another 16g. Do most aftermarket turbos come with all necessary hardware? more

Resolved Question: Size screws and nails needed?

I have a black TV Cart bought form Walmart about a year ago, had been in storage for a few months and I now need to put it back together. However the screws and nails have been misplaced, lost, etc. I'm going to go to the hardware store for replacements, but not sure what size screws and nails are needed. Any info is appreciated. Resolved Question: Does anyone get false replace cartridge messages on their Xerox laser printer, namely a Phaser 4510N?

We have a pair of Xerox Phaser 4510n printers in our office that give an apparent false message for us to change the toner cartridge (MICR) after printing only 500 or so pages. We can pick up each individual cartridge that was used and can tell by weight and balance that the cartridges are still full of toner, but when we try to reinsert them it still asks for us to replace the empty cartridge. Our vendor keeps sending us replacement cartridges, and much to our chagrin they produce the same result as well. Is this a problem with this model in general? Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to fix this? I have been talking back and forth with our vendor/suppllier for these printers and I can not get a straight answer. They did say that Xerox is working on a possible software patch that "could" eliminate this problem, but it has been 3 weeks since we have heard anything different from our vendor's tech/hardware support staff. Any feedback, tips, or advice would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance for taking the time to check my question out. JR more

Resolved Question: Upgrading To a New Motherboard and CPU?

I have a "stock" Dell Dimension 3000 with added 1g ram. I am upgrading the motherboard and CPU to a an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Black Edition. I still Dont know about the motherboard. I also have a Radeon X1550 256mb video card. This is my first motherboard and CPU change. I have a few questions though. Do i need to install XP again during installation? I have the same Hard Drive. Is there anything i need to do prior to installation of the motherboard and CPU? Is this list complete of all the steps? i copied and pasted these instructions, these are the instructions i will be following, is there any additional important tips i could have missed? The Change of hardware Changing the motherboard on a computer currently running XP 1.Start Windows and Logon as Administrator. 2.Insert the XP CD in the CD drive. 3.Let Autorun start. 4.Click on Install. 5.Select the Upgrade [recommended] from the Windows Setup 6.window Installation Type list. 7.Click Next 8.Follow on screen prompts until computer restarts. 9.Turn off computer as it restarts. 10.Remove power cord from computer. 11.Open Case. 12.Use either an anti-static wrist band or make sure you touch bare metal before handling or touching a component. 13.After labeling all cables and other power connectors; remove cables from motherboard. 14.Remove old motherboard and replace with new motherboard. 15.Attach cables and power connectors by consulting the motherboard user manual, and the labels you made when you disconnected them from the original mother board. 16.Reboot and access BIOS 17.Depending on the BIOS and OEM manufacturer, set date and time [very important], hard drive detection, CPU settings [if necessary] and boot order. 18.You will need to set the CD DRIVE before the Hard Drive in the boot order when booting from XP CD to Repair Install. 19.For this Upgrade procedure, Ignore "Press a key to boot from CD" on restart. 20.EXIT and say YES to SAVE BIOS settings. 21.Reboot 22.Allow upgrade to continue. 23.Setup installs the HAL [Hardware Abstract Layer] The IDE controller drivers [Hard Drive] Other drivers that the new motherboard must have. 24.Before connecting to the internet, read the Blaster worm warning ! and then click the browser back button to continue. The following applies to currently working XP systems. For moving a hard drive from non-booting XP system follow steps 25-31 then proceed to Option #1 Repair Install. The following information works if the hard drive being moved is a single partition or multiple partitions on a single drive on the computer or if XP is installed on another hard drive [other than the primary master partition Disk 0] and all hard drives from the system XP is moved; are also moved and cabled exactly as the previous computer. Follow the above steps 1 - 7 before shutting down Windows on the computer the hard drive/s are to be removed. Press Pause/Break as soon as computer reboots. Remove XP CD. Turn off computer If multiple hard drives are being swapped, write down and label how they were configured. It is very important to preserve the cabling so all drives retain the same drive letters. Remove the hard drive or drives Install hard drive with XP installed to new computer, making sure to duplicate the cabling of computer hard drive/s is moved from. Power on the computer and access the BIOS by pressing the key combination prompted by the BIOS, configure as described in the steps #16 & #17 above. EXIT and SAVE BIOS settings. Press Pause/Break, Insert XP. Press Pause/Break again to continue upgrade. Before connecting to the internet, read the Blaster worm warning ! Setting XP to new hardware Option #1 Repair Install to SET XP to New Motherboard Option #1 Repair Install Do Not BOOT into Windows XP on first boot after Motherboard or Hard Drive change! If booting from CD is not an option, return to BIOS and make sure booting from CD is the first boot option. Booting into Windows is only an option when you do a direct replacement of the Motherboard, otherwise it is like playing Russian Roulette. If you lose, it is fatal! If your computer does not support booting from the CD, check your OEM or Motherboard makers web site for updated BIOS. Perform a Repair Install by following the step by step below. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. This is the option you want to enable to proceed to the Repair Install. To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R. For the Repair Install do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery CSO what different steps would i need to do, in order to complete a clean install? more

Resolved Question: Tired of being my cousin's PC Tech?

I have been helping a cousin with her computer issues since a friend fried her configuration. I was happy to help - I love her and her family and it's something I could do. Fast forward many years. Every two weeks or every month or so, perfectly good computers in their house would have issues. If there is nothing wrong with them, then she wants to upgrade something, or add something. People in the house would do weird things to the systems, then when you ask them what was done, they are all deaf, mute and blind, weren't in a 10-mile radius of the PC, or some other reason that would prevent them from giving a correct or useful answer. I was having a devil of a time troubleshooting because nobody was telling me anything. I would find all kinds of peer to peer warez, malware, dodgy sites in their history and I'd spend ages troubleshooting or reinstalling. The hardware errors were out of control too. When I tell them I'm tired of leaving my work (as a computer tech) to come home and be presented with more work, she throws a sobbing fit. In case you're wondering, they never have simple problems. I don't know wtf they are doing, but it's never simple any more. It takes me hours of troubleshooting the hardware to isolate the issue, then she needs help finding a replacement, and so on and so forth. Admittedly, I'm now dragging my heels about fixing their PC (it will only break again I fear). She bought a laptop. I'm cool with that - it came with customer support. I made a point not to touch the thing. I didn't want to inherit the problems for that too. That's what customer support is for. So her friend or whoever (I have no clue, and it's impossible to get a straight explanation outta anybody now) installed something on her new laptop (I swear - less than a month old) and now some functionality is broken and throwing errors. She calls me about what the friend did and the such and such isn't working, and can I fix it? I gently said no - they need to call customer support, which apparently stinks for that system and she comes back with the sobbing fits. I do NOT want to alienate her or her friends. They ARE friends. But this is going a little too far. What should I do to gently put a stop to this and save my sanity? more

Resolved Question: The xbox 360 has not sold as much as we think it has?

The xbox 360 sales ( according to wikipedia.. i trust it atleast) is 27.93 million as of Jan. 2009. Well even though sales are sales does that not account for the fact people may have bought multiple xbox 360's due to hardware failures and such? Some people just buy 2+ but im talking about due to breakdowns. So really yes they sold 27.93 Million units, but were a big chunk of them just to replace their broken ones. If the xbox 360 didnt break as much as it did then that means they wouldn't have sold as many right? As people wouldn't have to go and get replacements. Do you understand what i'm saying so really it's not like it's that popular it's just that people kept buying more. OHH and yea it came out 1 year before the wii and ps3 did , so gamers in that period could get a new xbox, or go backwards and either get a ps2, xbox or gamecube? and most likely they just wanted to stay ahead and bought a 360. What are your oppinions on this?12. The point is though the number of ps2 he has is well "sales" even though he had multiple. I honestly doubt he went back, to the store that many times because his PS2 broke ( they have the least hardware failures). With an xbox 360, thats more likely to happen. So really they just got people to buy their console, then it broke, so they bought it again, it broke again, so they bought it again..and well yea. so microsoft was making $$$ like that. but then they were taken to court..im not trying to say the xbox 360 sucks im just stating some information and i wanted to see if it was Valid. answers like " 360 owns" were definitely not what i was looking for.Oh um..When xbox 360 were first launched i don't think they had the 3 year warranty for RROD but they might have had the 1 year one. But i mean with in that first year if they didn't have warranty at all people, within that year would have just got another one as it was the only thing offered. It's good they brought it out a year early but they rushed it and now we see the effects. Law suits, angry consumers, the media questioning its reliability..Also i here that more xbox 360 are getting the E74 error after the NXE update, and thats out of warranty, some peole swear by xbox and will by another one. No? some convert to playstation 3 for asylum. more

Resolved Question: Artifacting or Hardware Issue?

My window's graphic quality has been messed up lately, and I'm not sure if this is because of the graphics card or just another hardware issue. When I discovered this problem, I reformatted my computer fully, but after installing windows, my computer still has bad quality. Here are some pictures: http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/8185/img03561d.jpg http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/3819/img03581.jpg http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/6522/img03591.jpg You can see that the quality is 'blockish' and that the colors dosen't blend. (When I press print screen, it appears to look like a normal desktop) I haven't tried a replacement yet, due to the fact that after I put in an old graphics card, my monitor won't display anything. The screen would either be black, or just No Signal. All help would be appreciated. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: New Motherboard in Alienware Case won't boot/get to BIOS.?

I've been working on a friend's computer all today and can't find out why his new equipment won't allow the computer to start up. It's in an alienware case however everything else is new (except the processor and the CD drive). I've reseated pretty much everything and it doesn't help. I'm wondering if the hardware is faulty or am I just putting his rig together wrong? here's the specs: amd athlon 4300 2.4ghz msi nvidia gtx 260 sea gate 500gb hdd msi k9a2 platinum mobo 4 gb corsair xms2 ddr2 ram corsair TX850w psu coolermaster v8 cpu cooler When he first got the computer, his motherboard was messed up and he sent it back to get it fixed from alienware. His computer's been fine ever since (he upgraded to the current gpu, ram, and new case fans in december), however it crapped out on him about a week ago, so he bought a new psu to see if that fixed his issues. It didn't so we got a new mobo (which being an alienware we prepared by picking up a new copy of windows to go along with it). Essentially, it's a whole new computer, but it's got that clunky old alienware case on it. We've set up all the hardware to work and ithasn'tt been pretty. we've gone through all the troubleshooter issues on the MSI support page for the motherboard, but even after resetting the CMOS and plugging everything back in it will start the computer up however certain parts will not come on. The GTX 260's fans remain still while the card heats up. Plugging the card into a monitor wont display the BIOS at all, it's like the card's plugged into the psu and mobo but doing nothing (it is fairly new, and it wasn't the problem before he bought the new hardware. The CD drive wont open, it is an old ATA connectionwhichc ibelievee may be part of the problem since the hard drivee turns on and it's a sata drive. since the Alienware Case has no reset button, we're forced to turn off the psu to shut down. Even holding the power button down for a while wont work. Is there anything left i can do to help him? I think the source of the problem is the case, in particular the awkward fan cords and power connectors. Any suggestions? Perhaps taking the stuff back to frys and picking up replacements?Sorry about the wall of text here, this problem's been buggin' me so much I guess I forgot to space it out to make it a little easier on the eyes. more

Resolved Question: Can you help me upgrade my PC?

I am looking to do some upgrades to my computer because I want it to perform better and I do not want to buy a new one right now. I have an HP Pavilion a1253w with an AMD Athlon 64 processor 3400+ running at 2.19 Ghz and 2.43 GB of RAM. I am wondering how easy/feasible it is to change the processor and what would be a good replacement for what I have. I want to optimize my speed while on the internet, especially. As for the RAM, I am already pretty certain that I could add more than I have and I am considering doing that, but my main question here is about the processor. Also, if there is anything else that I could do in regards to hardware upgrades to increase speed and performance, please let me know. Thanks for any help. more

Resolved Question: What is the difference between GU-10 and GU-10+C light bulbs?

I just bought and installed a track light that came with GU-10+C bulbs. One of the bulbs was defective. So while I'm waiting for a replacement to be mailed to me from the manufacturer, I ran to the local hardware store to buy a temp replacement. I could only find GU-10 and notice that it is dimmer and doesn't have a "backlight" effect to it. The "+C"s tend to light up the glass light covers and create an effect that the regular GU-10 does not. Is that what the "+C" does? I'm just wanting to know because I know that these factory bulbs won't last long and I want to know which type of replacement bulbs I should order when I replace all four at one time. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Best Buy's geek squad broke some parts on my laptop?

I had a hardware problem a few months ago and the geek squad fixed it but when i got it back, the wireless switch was broken and the speakers were not working. Well im almost a senior in high school so the laptop is vital to my schoolwork and entertainment. Seeing as how they took about a month to fix the hardware problem, i told them that i would get over using wireless internet and just use an ethernet cable. Well now the ethernet cable is getting to be a hassle and so is not having any speakers. If i go to the geek squad and demand that they give me a replacement computer with my hard drive until they fix my laptop, will they? I have a warranty plan with them so everything they do is free. What if i broke my computer screen on purpose? Would they give me my hard drive and a replacement computer? more

Resolved Question: Lost Dell Vista reinstall disk, replace with different one?

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that has Vista Home Basic installed on it. I've been BSOD'ing lately and have been thinking about reinstalling Vista as restoring to factory settings doesn't seem to help. This is probably a last ditch effort to check if the software isn't at fault (and a hope that it isn't anything hardware related). Anyway, I lost the disk that came with the laptop originally. I still have the two driver ones but not the one with the OS. I do also have a Dell Inspirion PC with Vista Home Premium installed and I do have those disk still. Can I use that one on my laptop and if so, would I still have Home Basic or Home Premium? Or should I just try to get a replacement disk from Dell?I have already looked up the many, many different stop errors. Most seem to point to a driver problem but I would get a BSOD about five minutes after I reboot from one every single time. I have already restored the laptop to factory settings but the BSODs remains (though not as frequent, more like three times a day rather than five minutes after signing on) despite not having installed anything since restoring it to factory settings. I'm at my wits' end. Since I already backed up everything before restoring to factory settings, reinstalling the OS wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience in terms of data loss. I have run CHKDSK and MemTest, both came up fine. I have only one unsigned driver but it's part of one the original Dell programs so I doubt that's causing the problem. more

Resolved Question: Comet are useless 5 years warranty nothing in return help!?

Hello everyone, i bought a laptop last march from comet. We bought the 5 years warranty to go with the laptop, the service clerk told us if anything happened to it we would get a replacement.Well on feb this year it would not switch on, so we contacted comet who told us to ring acer which we did and book them too collect the laptop, which they did we packed it well with bubble wrap anywayz when it got to acer they sent us a bill off 188pound to cover delivery and also said they would not cover software issue and in the second email told us they would not cover hardware issue so we would have to pay or they return the laptop at a charge of 49pound. What made me angry was that they included extra damange such as the thermal bent and case cracked which was not the case when we sent it, dhl must have damanged it along the way.We went back to comet who told us to ring acer to return the laptop because we did not tell them we had accidential damange, now when we got it back and i rang comet they told me that the warranty is still with acer and i had to speak to them .The next day went to comet store and they told us that because we had extended warranty with them for 5 years that if we made a excuse about what happen to the laptop then comet insurance will repair or replace it. Why should we make a excuse we bought the laptop to comet and showed them the problem they told us to return to acer which we did dhl must have damaged it,acer say they do not cover hardware or software problems so what do they cover, comet have are money for extended warranty but not provide us with a repair or replacement what can we do? help thanks. more
